What is Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy?

Myofascial trigger point therapy is a safe way to help with muscle pain and improve range of motion. This therapy stimulates myofascial (muscle and connective tissue) trigger points that often refer pain sensations to other parts of the body. This means pain is experienced in areas located away from the trigger point.  The ‘referred pain’ is often dull, aching, or deep.  A problem with a trigger point in a neck muscle, for example, can result in wrist pain similar to that of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Myofascial trigger point therapy is an interactive pain management protocol wherein postural evaluations and muscular pain patterns are taken into account.  Trigger point compression, myofascial release, and stretching exercises relating to targeted muscles are involved with this therapy.

This therapy does not involve the use of lotions or oils. Instead, pain patterns are identified, and the involved muscles are treated.  Muscle range of motion testing, postural evaluation, active stretching, and myofascial release are some of the techniques and/or processes involved with trigger point therapy.  It is a more specific and clinical modality in its approach to acute and chronic pain treatment.

The Goals of Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy

The goals of myofascial trigger point therapy include reducing pain, improving muscle range of motion, and determining (and thereby helping mitigate) any perpetuating factors that are keeping you in pain.  Body mechanics at work or at home, posture, and poor nutrition are examples of perpetuating factors.

Do My Medical Conditions Make a Difference?

Yes.  For that reason, the therapist asks general health questions.  It is very important that you inform the therapist of any health problems and diagnoses you have or any medications you are taking.  If you are under a doctor’s care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage or trigger point therapy prior to any session.
